2 &1/2 * 3 & 1/3 *1 &1/5 Why cant I reduce and get the right answer?

When I take the short cut and reduce this problem, I get 4. When I simply multiply across I get 10, which I know is right. I thought you could reduce first, but my reduction gets the wrong answer. Does any one know why?? I turn them into improper fractions and reduce to 1/1 * 2/1 * 2/1 . Is that wrong?? Thanks
